/console for Remote Desktop fails in Windows XP Service Pack 3 RC2

I often use the /console option in Remote Desktop to connect to an existing session.  Generally I leave my desktop logged in and locked at work – if I need to access any files on it remotely I can VPN into my works network and use Remote Desktop to connect to “computername.work.edu /console” and it will connect to my existing session. It’s great, because it means I can leave VS or SQL Server Management Studio open and acces my work right from where I left off.

However, after installing the latest RC of SP3 on my laptop, I can no longer connect from my  laptop to my desktop.  I can’t find a work around and have downgraded back to SP2 and am happily Remoting again :)

For XP SP3 you have to use /admin

    Hi there.

I have an issue I cannot solve. I have previosuly installed Admin Pack from MS win Server 03, where I use Remote Desktops. After installation of SP3, I’m unable to connect myself to any of my servers on the list, despite that checkbox is enable for console.

Is there any solution out yet?

    Thank You,
    Best Regards

Sorry… I meant I cannot connect myself directly to console but it always create new sessions.

Ditto to what Mike Says is saying. We are experiencing the same issue. Using Remote Desktops from the Windows 2003 R2 admin pak we are NOT connecting to the console session of our servers despite the box being checked. We also use Real VNC as another way of managing our servers so this appears to be the only way we can connect to the console. It seems the issue began when we upgraded to SP3 on our workstations. However, the same issue occurs when running remote desktops from my Vista x64 workstation with the admin pak r2 installed.

    Using

    mstsc /admin

instead of /console works. It will allow you to connect to the existing console session. Annoying that MS in their infinite wisdom changed it.
